AKDA Karakachans
Karakachans are a beautiful livestock guardian dog (LGD) breed that originated in Bulgaria. When we had need for LGDs, we did a lot of research on the various LGD breeds. We settled on Karakachans for several reasons. They are gentle, devoted, don’t bark excessively or wander as much, and have a variety of beautiful colors. The integrity of the LGD purpose has been strongly protected and they are a more rare breed in the USA that is worthy of preserving. After raising working Border Collies for over a decade, it was so fun to watch another purpose bred breed instinctively do what they were bred to do. When we first got our LGD pups we immediately started training them with our chickens, as poultry are hardest for any dog breed. Also keep in mind, we made sure to get our pups from breeders with quality dogs that were raising their pups with the animal species we also needed them for. We never once lost a chicken to our LGD pups. Now had I turned a couple Border Collie pups in with the chickens it would have been another story. It has been so fun to watch this breed do what they were bred to do. They love our family and kids. Even when they have full access to the farm, I will always find them lying with the sheep or bottle calves. They patrol the farm yet stay close. We have chickens, sheep, hogs, dairy, beef, and horses. They are excellent with all of them from birth on. Sera is truly an incredible representation of the Karakachan breed and LGDs in general. She is a gentle soul wise beyond her years. She has never done anything besides love and care for everything under her charge regardless of the species. Even as a puppy, she never required reprimanding for chasing or being rough. It just wasn’t in her nature. She greets everyone and loves people, adults and kids alike. Her biggest fault is she will put her foot on you to remind you to keep petting her. LOL. She is faithful and devoted. She quietly keeps watch day and night. If all dogs were as “easy” as Sera, everyone would have one like her. She is a true blessing to our family and farm.

Clay is the perfect partner to Sera. He doesn’t let anything sneak by him and takes his job as farm guardian very seriously. He is faithful and loves his animals and family deeply. He is kind to strangers, but will not be your best friend until he knows you belong. He is a handsome representation of the breed and like Sera, comes from generations of purposely bred dogs with the integrity of this incredible breed at the forefront and it shows.
